Not a lot of people know that

Post by Hughie »

Michael Caine never actually said that. But I thought it might be a good heading for a topic.
Add your take on "Not a lot of people know that".

In the 1950s we had a good neighbour in Whitlees Crescent in Ardrossan, Laura Phillips (nee Melville).
Often you'd hear her call out to acquaintances to hold on as she'd walk down the street with them.

The method she used to call them was the Australian bush call of Cooee! Since coming to Oz I've often wondered where did she pick that up from.

I might have found the answer:
One of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes mysteries hinges on the use of "cooee!". "The Boscombe Valley Mystery" is solved partly because, unlike everyone else, Holmes recognizes the call is commonly used among Australians.

The point is :

Not a lot of people know that

Quite a few animals can't jump, most notably the elephant.

Hughie, there's a word from the past, Cooee. I always remember my mother using it often in the early 1950s when trying to attract the attention of a friend or whoever when she was "doon the street".
Dont know where she got it from but I always thought it was an odd word as I hardly heard anyone else use it.
She was brought up in Kilwinning. ( She maybe knew an old Digger who stayed up the Corsehill).
Best wishes to all Threetowners. joeh fae Embra

The term taking the piss comes from the world of wool dying. Human urine was used in the manufacture of dye and people who's job it was to collect/transport it would lie about what they were transporting and say it was some other form of liquid. So no your not your taking the piss was shouted at them.

Hi Joe, the diggers came from all over, even the Corsehill - happy memories of my youth up there at the Love Hall.

Lots of people know that if you see a heads up penny on the ground you should pick it up for good luck......but not many know that if you see a tails down penny you should turn it heads up and leave it there for someone else to pick it up for good luck...:) I know, silly, but what the heck..it can't hurt, eh no? :)

The nine of diamonds playing card is often referred to as the "Curse of Scotland" There are a number of reasons given for this connection: 1. It was the playing card used by Sir John Dalrymple, the Earl of Stair, to cryptically authorise the Glencoe Massacre.

Part of an article in the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald in June 1900
Nine Tailors Make a Man.- In olden times when a person died it was customary to toll the church bell a certain number of times to indicate whether it was a man, woman, or child. For a woman it was tolled three times, and for a man thrice three times. The stroke of a bell was called a "teller," and hence it was nine tellers for man; or, as folks said in those days, "Nine tellers mark a man." This saying, which was continued long after the tolling custom was abolished, finally became converted into the present saying, "Nine tailors make a man," which is devoid of both sense and reason.
