May contain Peanuts!

Bought this peanut butter today, I suppose that last line is the default for everything processed through the same grinding machine. Allergies to such things as peanuts have become a serious issue in our times for some children.

Being pedantic, saying "may contain nuts" is a reasonable statement.

Peanuts are not nuts. Think about how they grow. They are legumes, and are more closely related to peas than to nuts.

So "pure" peanut butter will not contain any nuts.

But it is manufactured in a factory where other products are made, and there is a risk of cross-contamination. So there's a risk that some nuts may find their way into the peanut butter.

So the "may contain nuts" statement is completely correct!

Thanks, Bruce. I knew about the blanket statement "may contain nuts", because of the chance of cross-contamination, but peanuts not being nuts was a new one on me.

Its true enough - they are not nuts but they can be the most dangerous of all for people with allergies. On the other hand macadamias can be fatal for dogs!

Allergies crops up often in our conversations and neither of us remember knowing anyone when we were growing up who had an allergy. We have come to the conclusion that we shared things and played in the dirt and built up an immunity to things.
