One which always made me laugh was to banjo (punch) somebody .

Aye, I remember Banjo as well JD. I Also recall Gub or Gubbed.
Gub obviously means Mouth, but it was taken a step further with ... "Shut it or I'll gub ye" which meant a threat to punch somedody in the mouth.
Not that the Threetowns was a particularly violent place when I was growing up, it wasn't. These words and phrases were simply used to describe certain unruly occurrences, shall we say.

To most of the folk I know who are familiar with the word and it's usage - Guff means 'nonsense' or 'crap' etc. but it's also often used between friends in a light hearted and humorous sense. brianf chipped in with a similar type of phrase often heard among friends .. Awa' an fill yer breeks!

I can spout guff with the best of 'em .. but one man's 'guff' is another man's 'wisdom'
