Re: Archaic and silly old outdated laws.

Brian, there are a number of bizarre laws, maybe especially here! If I could ride a bicycle I'd be tempted to visit nearby Baldwin Park. 8) Yes Morag - I suspect there would not be enough space on this whole site to list all the bizzare town, county, City, State and Federal laws in the US  We...

Re: The ... What are you doing or thinking right now - Topic

I think this must be the one thing that really annoys me. Don't seem to notice it so much in shopping centres but in houses or eateries I find it hard to cope with. Can't count the number of caps Bobby has left behind in eateries. Funny thing that habits can differ around the world and change over ...

Re: NINETIETH ANNIVERSARY OF RADIO SIGNALS RECEIVED IN ARDRO

Here is the little Montgomery Ward radio on the right at our local Doll Club display. The doll leaning on and wearing the headphones is a 1919 Louis Amberg American walking doll belonging to me. The radio on the left is an early mains powered radio made by Philips with its separate Art Deco Bakelite...

Re: NINETIETH ANNIVERSARY OF RADIO SIGNALS RECEIVED IN ARDRO

Very interesting. I still have a small collection of broadcast radio receivers. I used to have a couple of crystal sets that would have dated to the time of the experiment. I still have two of the oldest cheap commercial receivers dating to 1922. One is a one valve set sold by Montgomery Ward in the...

Re: The Plug Dropper - Ardrossan Steam Engine Days

[quote=" if a fireman dropped a plug by failing to keep the correct water level in the boiler it was almost a hanging offence in railway terms[/quote] And so it should be - it could be dangerous. Here in South Australia a few years back one of our great streamline 520 class locos (one of the mo...

Re: The Plug Dropper - Ardrossan Steam Engine Days

So what exactly is a Plug Dropper ? Hello Rowanside, long time no see, how are you? The mention of Archie Manuel MP reminded of the 1950s when cars were scarce things and he used to take us in his car up to the Primrose Valley while he went fishing in the loch. Have a wee search on plug dropper Ard...

Re: [Split from] A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats

fish and chips..slevvers.. Except it isnt haddock and chips Morag, if the distinguished visitor tells the truth, its SHARK and chips Right on Meg. They used to call it Flake in the fish shops here in Oz. A peculiarity of Oz chip shops is that you have to make a specific request, with the shop assis...

Re: Australian Bushfires - NSW

Kids lighting these fires is not the worst of it. There have been a few instances over the years of firefighters deliberately starting malicious fires. Unfortunately as an occupation it can attract the odd firebug for strange reasons. Wee Ali

Re: spelling

Here in Oz we would all be relegated to the sundowners' bar. But seriously I don't worry much about spelling. Especially my surname. I tell them too spell it anyway they like when asked in a takeaway or restaurant - after all my ancestors did. One of the family birth certificates is spelled M...

Re: What was your first car?

just made a wee list of cars I've owned and it totals 30 cars or vans and 5 motorbikes. Longest I kept one was 7 years for a Black Volvo 240GL Estate 2.4 7 seater automatic. Holidayed across Europe in it for 5 summers. I went to try and add up the number of cars I owned in the wee hours of this mor...
