Re: Jimmy Slaven

Yes John Boyd came from Kilwinning and was an apprentice with SSEB at Hunterston.
Haven't heard anything of him since the late '60s but understand he moved to the Shetlands.

Re: Jimmy Slaven

What a shame for both.
I was an apprentice with John Boyd who replaced Jimmy as lead singer.
I came across a photo of the Chase recently and was wondering what happened to them all.

Re: Tommy Hughes

I could never condone the actions of Tommy Hughes but he was a product of his time and acted in a way that was deemed acceptable then. He wasn't the only teacher who used corporal punishment to excess.
He had his good points - I just made sure I kept on his good side.

Re: Tommy Hughes

Stivis, I know what you mean but, for those days, he was probably quite normal. Corporal punishment was allowed and child protection wasn't invented then. However, nowadays he would have been sacked (or prosecuted) for what he did. Different times, different standards and there are many who wish we ...

Re: Is there sectarianism in the 3Ts?

I cannot comment on today's situation but when I was young in the 60s and 70s sectarianism was the norm and if you don't agree you must have been living in cuckoo land ! Segregated schools, orange order, rangers and celtic, as well as employers who favoured certain religions - it all existed. I reme...

Re: School Dinners - where were they cooked

I think they were cooked on site at the Academy.
I took school dinners when I went to the secondary.
Loved Wednesdays - mince and tatties !
Can even now recall the smell !

Scottish Football

I trust last nights abysmal performance from our "European contenders" came as no shock to anyone. Scottish football has been going downhill for years and years and will only get poorer unless radical transformation at all levels happens. For example 1. Football in Scotland is judged on th...

Would you turn the clock back ?

For all the troubles of today I wouldn't want to turn the clock back and go back to the 50s.

Re: the fair in saltcoats 60s

Sandra - what memories ! My fondest memories of the fair date back to 1963/64. I seem to remember a hot summer with the town packed with trippers from Glasgow. The music of the day was the Beatles, Hollies, Dusty Springfield etc etc and I can almost touch the smell of the hamburgers and onions and t...
