Re: Portraits of Ardrossan Academy teachers

I remember Mr Little myself, Alex, and I doubt very much that it's him; he did have hair that stood up a bit like that, but that's the only similarity. And a metalwork teacher wasn't a very likely person either to attract the attention of girl pupils , who weren't exactly to be found in great number...

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats

We had all that too when I was small, Morag; the wringer and the pull-down clothes-airer and a big clothes-horse by the fire. It was only the bigger stuff my mother sent to the laundry. But what a chore it all was even so, especially in the Saltcoats climate. I would guess that Munro Wallpapers, nex...

Re: Portraits of Ardrossan Academy teachers

There is in fact one more teacher portrait in this group; but in this case I have no idea who he was. Maybe one of you will be able to come up with a positive identification. Mr Shearer.JPG He's shown as Cupid; suggesting he was something of a favourite among female pupils. But the quotation that ca...

Re: Photographs of Glencairn Primary Stevenston

I found this one in an old newspaper I have, Boots, which might possibly be of interest to you or others; it shows pupils and parents of Glencairn School at an Open Day they had in June 1972.

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats

Moving on now, next door at No 47 was the shop of Munro Cleaners, the biggest of the local laundries, whose works used to be one of the landmarks of Ardrossan's Dalry Road. phpiCfVrPAM.jpg As you can see from the advertisement, they also had a shop in Glasgow St; one we managed to miss off the list ...

Re: Hunterston

It really is a superb website. It's fascinating to see how historic and rural Hunterston still co-exists alongside all the industrial developments; I'd imagined that more of it would have been swept away by them. Also, as the website's creator says, Hunterston A is quite a beautiful building, someth...

Re: North Shore, Ardrossan

What seemed mystifying to me, was why such a thing would ever be set up there in the first place. But I find that this question has been much discussed on 3T already: http://www.threetowners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7833#p7833 http://www.threetowners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=125566#p125566 I can't...

It's only struck me now, PT, how young you were starting out with Veronica; though I suppose you may have tagged along to help older siblings at first. Makes me feel quite ashamed of my sheltered and privileged upbringing. :(

Re: Glasgow Fair

Sounds wonderful, Meg; hope the weather has held for you. Mid-July always seems to have the characteristic that if the weather isn't very good, it's REALLY bad; especially in Scotland. It had never struck me before that Glasgow Fair time coincides with St Swithin's Day down south ( 15th July ) , whe...

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats

Penny Tray, Thanks so much for that wonderfully vivid portrait of Veronica. I remember hearing once that her father started out as a newsboy who cried his wares on the streets of Glasgow. So she'd obviously inherited a good grasp of the required technique....That may explain too her soft spot for yo...

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats

So now we come to No 45 Countess Street. A newsagent's is obviously in prospect; on the wall high up above is an old sign picturing a globe , advertising The News of the World. The shopfront is hung all about with quantities of buckets, spades, beach toys, and every other kind of goods you might wan...
