Well done you!

Belated congratulations Meg. It'll be worth it. Hell, you could be back at Stanley School or Winton. No Miss Revie to deal with this time around though

Hi There are three books sadly now out of print called The Statistical Accounts for Ayrshire. These were for the years 1791, 1840 and 1951. I have the 1951 edition and I am sure its format is similar to the previous editions. It mentions trade folks, local businesses in detail as well as many other ...

Not a trick of your imagination Jim. It must be at least 45 years since I was l at the greasy pole and it did have blocks of wood attached in those days.

Thanks George and Meg for more memories. I spent a lot of each summer up at the filter house. I well remember Tommy's mum and dad and brothers (one of whom I think was called Raymond). We used to also buy our day tickets for the Eglinton Angling club there then head up to either the Mill or Busbie d...

Thanks for the reply Harry. I wonder if anyone has pictures of the place when it was in operation, although as I said befere, due to the nature of work there probably were never any taken. Very interesting to know though that it belonged to Shell Mex and although I knew it 'canned' fuel I didn't rea...

Great, Harry. Just had a look and that's the first time I've seen a shot of the can factory. I wonder if those are the original buildings or were put up later.

Very many thanks

hi Folks I also remember the old building Mitchy and I think, like you, it was the gatehouse to the factory. Harry I'm not a relative to the folks you mention. Both my parents worked at the Can Factory in war-time and they spoke about the place often. So much so, I'm interested in finding out more a...

Hello Mitchy

It does indeed refer to the can factory, along the inches road. I grew up listening to my folks talk about the place so I thought I'd use it is my name here. It couldn't be more 'local' could it

Hi Mitchy

A few years ago I bought a book called Whispers of Horse Island by John and Noreen Steele. Hopefully it will still be available to buy locally or perhaps it is available at your local library. It is well worth getting as it tells the reader a lot about the island and its history.

Ok Jim

I've found him. What's the best way to send the information to you. I can publish it here or would it suit you better by email. If Hewmac is reading this can we exchange email addresses on this board?

Many thanks
