Re: About Bob Bryden

Hi Hugh, At the moment I feel fairly normal with no obvious indication that I’ve any serious life threatening illness. A senior palliative care nurse in Palmerston North Hospital referred me to our local Hospice here In Wanganui. Since coming home from hospital I’ve had a visit from a Hospice lady w...

Re: mv lion

I was interested to note the ultimate fate of the MV Lion in 2004 as the ship which brought my family & I to New Zealand in 1963 was the former Shaw Savill liner the Southern Cross & it suffered the same fate in 2003 & was scrapped at the same location. I looked up photos of that event &...

Re: mv lion

You’re welcome to use it. Anyone know what’s happened to the MV Lion since cessation of its Ardrossan service ?

Re: Lemons and Household Tips

I don’t need to buy lemons as I’ve a very prolific tree right outside my lounge window. However another excellent ant deterrent is Apple cider Vinegar- ideally DYC Brand but I don’t know its availability outside New Zealand. I’ve tried other brands but don’t find them as effective. I have a couple o...

Re: Barr Place/Kilmahew Street/Montgomerie Street

Penny Tray, I certainly wasn’t born at home after the disaster of my brother’s birth on 25.1.1949. We were both born in Ayrshire Central Hospital at Irvine. Billy’s birth was a month overdue AND a breech delivery. The incompetent doctors supposedly looking after Mum insisted she wasn’t due for anoth...

Re: Barr Place/Kilmahew Street/Montgomerie Street

I was only 2 years old when we moved up to 3 Churchill Drive so was too young to recall it myself. Bob Bob I don’t know about where you lived previously but I do remember you staying in Churchhill Drive I stayed in Whitecraig Road. You stayed next to the lad Wilson who stayed in the 1000 house We w...

Probably a long shot but does anyone who remembers my family living in Barr Place recall what No. we lived at ? I was only 2 years old when we moved up to 3 Churchill Drive so was too young to recall it myself.

Re: ICI Ardeer Staff Photos

I've no doubt you're right about the espionage potential of photography at Ardeer during the war years but the war ended in 1945 & Mum didn't leave until 1947. The mention of your grandfather was interesting & I'm assuming his passing wasn't in the canteen where Mum was in charge as there wa...

ICI Ardeer Staff Photos

Just been looking at the Staff Photos on Threetowners & a wee bit disappointed there are none for the period 1938-1947 when my mum worked there. She was Helen Kellie back then & initially worked in the office & latterly was in charge of one of the staff canteens. She left Ardeer in 1947 ...

Re: Location of Cowie Family Home in South Beach road

Thanks for posting the photo Hughie. I only wish Mum was still alive to see it. If she was she'd be 106 now. Mum told us some interesting stories of her 10 years as cook there 1928-1938.One that sticks in my mind is one where she had a pheasant to cook for the family's dinner but when she went to do...

Just checked that link Penny but the photos have gone & the text remains. A short while ago I got a good aerial photo of 17 South Crescent using Google Earth Pro ( free ) .

Re: Location of Cowie Family Home in South Beach road

Sorry for my very belated reply. Since having an Ultra Fast Fibre Broadband connection installed a year or so back I’ve been concentrating more on You Tube amongst other things. Anyway I have Google Earth Pro on my computer so went into it & inserted 17 South Crescent , Ardrossan in the search b...
