A great historical record George.
Do you happen to have a photo of Stanley farm I used to take a short cut through there going to school.
I don't, Meekan, but if I come across one, I'll be happy to share it.

Re: buildings built and demolished in my lifetime

Stanley School and the High Tide Hotel in Ardrossan were mentioned. Here are photos of them before and after demolition. Construction of Stanley School started in September 1959 on the site of what was previously Stanley Farm. It opened to pupils in August 1963 and closed on 27 June 2007. It was rep...

Re: Football is back - Aussie Rules

That's a smashing photo, Hughie. Thanks for posting it. Incidentally, in your first post, you mentioned that you got an official Winton Rovers centenary T-shirt at Dick's testimonial. That was in 1992 and the club was founded in 1900 so you must have got the shirt in 2000 or later. This year marks t...

Re: Football is back - Aussie Rules

Hughie Dick Malcomson's testimonial game was on 28 July 1992. The report below is from the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald. WINTON ROVERS 0 – CELTIC 4 Celts to the fore for Dick The fans turned out in force and Celtic turned on the style to mark Winton Rovers veteran Dick Malcolmson‘s well-deserved t...

My mother had them sitting in a display cabinet and our names were etched on them.
Meekan
There is no name etched on the beaker that I have. How come your names were etched on yours?

Re: Ardrossan centenary

Meekan I've also got a centenary beaker but it wasn't given to me in 1946 - I'm far, far too young. :D Your beaker looks shinier and in better condition than mine which was given to me about two years ago by a friend whose mother had died. She was a long-time Ardrossan resident and was probably give...

Re: Tank traps dalry road

That's right, Bonzo. The trap covers are across the road from the site of the Stanley Hotel, beyond the old Registration Office and before the Iron Bridge.

Re: Tank traps dalry road

On today's walk, I made two 'discoveries'. There are tank traps in Ardrossan Road in Saltcoats near the old Registration Office. http://www.s173884875.websitehome.co.uk/Images/Extra/TankTrapsSaltcoats1-K51.jpg The 'concrete block' at Alpine Stores is a metal cabinet. http://www.s173884875.websitehom...

Here is a photo of Alpine Stores in September 2002 - without the concrete block.

Re: Tank traps dalry road

These photos of the tank trap covers across from Alpine Stores in Dalry Road were taken in September 2005 - and they are still there. http://www.s173884875.websitehome.co.uk/Images/TankTraps1.jpg http://www.s173884875.websitehome.co.uk/Images/TankTraps2.jpg There are other tank traps covers in Glasg...

Re: Ardrossan - On This Day In History

Meekan, the booklet was probably “The Finest Place for a Lasting Colliery” published by the AANHS. The Finest Place for a Lasting Colliery is downloadable from https://aanhsorg.files.wordpress.com/2018/05/finest-place-for-a-lasting-colliery.pdf. In it, there is a map of coal pits in North Ayrshire ...
