Old Ship Photos

Forgive me if this is a general posting rather than Genealogy. My G. Grandfather, James McMILLAN, was a ship’s captain working from Saltcoats and Ardrossan. He had an interest in the ships ‘Closeburn’, ‘Dalswinton’, ‘Dunscore’ and possibly ‘Algeria’. I have found a picture and a little information o...

Query For Orr Family Researchers

Is there good research in the Threetowners community for the Orr family in Saltcoats around 1800? My 2xg grandmother was Agnes Orr, but it seems there were many Orr babies named Agnes in the area. Agnes married William McCreadie in 1815 and according to the 1851 Scotland Census, she was born in Salt...

Sailors' Graveyard

Does anybody from the Three Towns have photos or transcripts of graves from the old graveyard down the west coast from Lochranza? I'd be interested to see these as there are lots of sailors in the family. Something I wish I'd known about when I visited Arran.

Re: McMillan, Black, McCreadie, Orr families.

Thanks S.C I wondered about the Lickers and the Gickers in the Census. There often seem to be other names at the bottom of the list. I notice Margaret is listed as a "Press" Maker. Jessie was listed as dressmaker in the 1851 census so I wonder if Press is a transcription error? It's intere...

Re: McMillan, Black, McCreadie, Orr families.

Thank you so much for all that info, S.C. Yes, William did remarry. William's death notice refers to his second wife, Eliza Penny previously to Agnes Orr. Ref: Scotland's People S R Deaths 1872 Statutory Deaths McCreadie, William 576/02 0025 District of New Ardsrossan, County of Ayr. Unfortunately I...

Re: McMillan, Black, McCreadie, Orr families.

Hello S.C., and a very happy 2014 to you and all at Threetowners. I have Agnes Orr’s marriage to William McCreadie on 4th April 1815 at Saltcoats. Ref: Scotlands People OPR Marriages and Banns copied from a memorandum on 20th April 1853 This document included the births of their children. Margaret b...

Re: McMillan, Black, McCreadie, Orr families.

Thank you, SC, for setting me back on course. I now feel confident that the information I have can be relied upon, and that I can discount the question of Catherine Clark. You’re right, of course, re the date of birth of Robert. The indistinct lettering looks like 1786 and I presumed Robert would be...

Re: McMillan, Black, McCreadie, Orr families.

Hello SC. I'm most grateful for your interest in my quest. Thank you! I don’t have the date of death of either Robert or Catherine McMillan. Their marriage date I have of 1805 agrees with yours. Robert Baillie McMillan is not part of our known history. The Statutory Marriage register on Scotlandspeo...

Re: McMillan, Black, McCreadie, Orr families.

The Statutory Register of Marriages shows James McMillan marrying Jessie McCreadie in 1858 at Ardrossan. James' parents are shown as Robert McMillan and Catherine McMillan, maiden name Black. Looking at the image of the document, the "Black" could easily have been interpreted in the transc...

McMillan, Black, McCreadie, Orr families.

My ancestors came from Arran. I'm interested in Robert McMillan (B: 1766) who married Catherine Black (B: 1786). There must still be some family connections at Ardrossan. Also William McCreadie (B: 18/3/1792) who married Agnes Orr(B: 1794). I presume William McCreadie is the William McReadie mention...
