Re: Sir Harry Lauder link to Stevenston

The Livingston Church centenary booklet (1987) includes some detail on the organ. Originally presented to the Highlander's Memorial Church in Glasgow by Sir Harry Lauder, the famous Scots comedian, in memory of his son, John, killed in the First World War, the organ was purchased by the congregation...

Re: "W" Stands For... ??

I parked on Hamilton Street this morning and on returning to the car, realised it was at the door of this building. Noted the number on the doorpost as 42 and googled it when I got home finding the following. Description: 42 Hamilton Street Category: C(S) Date Listed: 26 February 1980 Historic Scotl...

Re: Before The Bottom End Was Built (Stevenston)

During a conversation about the Beach Holiday Camp, I was surprised to learn that at least one of the buildings was in use in Stevenston for many years after the camp closed. The Dance Hall was purchased and relocated to Craigdene Drive as the Hayocks Gospel Hall.

Re: Before The Bottom End Was Built (Stevenston)

John Millar's book "In the shadow of the dynamite" includes a couple of mentions about the holiday camp. Around May 1935 Shanks and McEwan erected about 20 chalets, a shop, restaurant, dance hall, toilets and offices, laid out grass camping areas and announced in the local press that the B...

Re: Before The Bottom End Was Built (Stevenston)

I reckoned the light square area was the bowling green surrounded by Shore Road, Caledonia Road, Carment Drive and Warner Street. As to the date, the absence of the rail bridge over Caledonia Road (at Ardoch Crescent) suggests to me that it is some time after the site clear up. Could it be as late a...

Re: Picture Puzzle - Name the movie

Good effort so far but I've found a solution today which has 5 titles we have not yet listed. By way of keeping the challenge going a bit longer, the titles from our list that are not in the found solution are: 24 Shooting Stars (not checked IMDB for a film but it may only be a TV show) 35 The Runni...

Re: where to start research ? need help

Using a standard login for Scotlandspeople you don't get images for births within the last 100 years, likewise no images for deaths within last 50 years, nor marriages within the last 75 years. If you are local, then a visit to the Burns Monument Centre at Kilmarnock is very worth while. For a fee o...

Re: " A Saunter roon Stinstin"

I reckoned that picture was possibly earlier than mine and thats why I wondered if there was some sort of repair/replacement happening when my was taken. The blue base looks shorter than the base in the two b&w pictures and could simply be a temporary cap to allow the pool to stay open while the...

Re: " A Saunter roon Stinstin"

The date for my paddling pool photo is 1960-61 as I was 5 or 6. I have a Stevenston Holiday Guide booklet which has the same photo as posted by Ross Sturgeon and Little Plum. I have estimated the guide book as a 1967 publication as the foreword was written by Provost J Forde MBE JP and an internet s...
