Re: Scottish independance - how would you vote?

It's a NO! from me. The beauty of this United Kingdom is the disparate parts that make it what it is, without each other it would not be the same strong together, free speaking, argumentative but successful union it is. Nowt to do with the economy or politicians, it is about us, we are what we are.

Re: Mark Menzies, MP - Ardrossan man

Since David Cameron is our new Prime Minister we should maybe keep an eye on this Ardrossan born/schooled MP (click on about Mark). P.T., it looks to me that he has been given a safe seat to represent. This would suggest the Tories see him as a future high fly er, and if this is the case, I'm sure ...

Re: Higher Grade / Stevenston High ???

Just got to this question!! I left, what was by then the High School, in the summer of 62. When we 'came up' from the primary in 59 the senior school was still called the Higher Grade. I believe that the change occured when the school collected a fourth year, it was something to do with the taking o...

Re: " A Saunter roon Stinstin"

It seemed to me that the quarry froze over every year, it probably didn't but it seemed like it. The pike were supposed to be as big as sharks in there, were there swans nesting on the island? Anyone know how deep it actually is?

Re: Saltcoats Bowling Alley

I was about when the Pavilion changed from a theatre to a bowling alley, I can remember going in there and having my first ten pin bowling lesson. I am pretty sure it didn't have 9 lanes though, 4 or 6 at the maximum. Chalmers Tortolano was one of the first really good players, good enough to repres...

Re: Horse Island, Ardrossan

Has anyone ever heard of a source of fresh water on Horsle Island?

If you have a look at the island on google earth you can see numerous small pools in the 'grassed' areas, perhaps the source of 'fresh' water for the animals. Mibbe the beef'd be a little salty though :)

Re: " A Saunter roon Stinstin"

I think this was covered before with the Jew's harp industry, Collenan. Not sure where in the forum it is though a search for Jew's harp should bring it up! Thanks Morag :( Well deflated!. I think what drew me to this was how a whole lifestyle can grow in a community and then vanish almost with tra...

Re: " A Saunter roon Stinstin"

I was told the old golf course clubhouse now belongs to the late Willie Shields family half way along George Street.I believe his daughter stays there now. Found this sourced by the 'Kernal of Cunninghame by James Clements' 1880 Nine hole golf course laid out on the foreshore, stretching from the N...

Re: Harris of Saltcoats

I seem to remember going upstairs to the music counter, where the assistant would play your request, and you stood in a cubical to listen to your selection, I think there was 2 or 3 of these. Then again I might be getting mixed up with Underwoods shop in Hamilton St or maybe both had them ? ...

Re: Just Joined? Please Introduce Yourself

Hi Frank. Recently went back and lived for about 5 years in Stevenston (moved again!). The only guy I bumped into from our era was Jim Lyons (who still stays down the bottom end). Have been in contact, via this site, with a couple of others that you may also know - James McCrae and Jean Park. Amazi...
