Hi Ellen,
Looks like we both had the same idea this morning. I've just been comparing the children of Mary Keenan and those of Mary Gaining. (That we know of).

Mary Keenan
Children:
John b. abt.1861
Lawrence b. abt. 1863
Hugh b. abt. 1865
James b. abt. 1868
Margaret b. abt. 1870
Mary Ann b. abt 1870
William b.abt. 1874

Mary Gaining
Children:
Hugh b. 8/1/1865
James b. 2/7/1867
Mary Ann b. 13/1/1870
William b. 26/12/1872
Alexander b.1875 d. 1876
Lawrence Gaining b. abt. 1875

They look like the same person to me. Of course, at a time when few people could read and write, accents could change everything. I've used SP before, but recently I've been concentrating on Ireland so I let it lapse. When I work out the best certs to get, I'll get some credits for them.
Thanks, Patrick.

Hi Patrick,
Could be a Spelling error or someone may have entered the wrong name on a marriage/death certificate.Scotlandspeople will have the birth of William 1872 Ardrossan, and show where parents married.£6 for 30 units.Good value .There should also be death details for Thomas And Mary online for you to find, that will show both their parents.

Ellen

Hi Ellen,
Thanks for that. I've just had a look at your Mary Gaining, with children Alexander, Hugh, Mary Ann, James, William and Laurence Gaining. several of the children seem to match Thomas' family. Then found records that showed a Thomas Hamilton and Mary Gaining as a couple. So, are Mary Keenan and Mary Gaining one and the same?
Hugh was born in 1865 in Ardrossan, so if he turns up in the 1871 in Thomas' family, it looks promising. If he does, his birth certificate will give us his mother's correct name, hopefully. Just done a quick search on SP but can't find a marriage for Thomas Hamilton and Mary Gaining, perhaps they married in Ireland (If at all).
Thanks again, Patrick.

Hi Ellen,
First my apologies. I missed the last three lines of your post, off the bottom of the screen!

From William Hamilton and Mary Ann Dailly's marriage lines in 1901:

William Hamilton, 27 years old, Seaman (Merchant Service)
Residence: 10 Montgomerie Lane, Ardrossan. (bad to read, but I think Montgomerie is correct).
Father: Thomas Hamilton, Dock Labourer.
Mother: Mary Hamilton m.s. Keenan.

To clarify:
1) Thomas Hamilton marries Mary Keenan.
2) They have a son, William Hamilton.
3) John Dailly marries Margaret Hannan.
4) They have a daughter, Mary Ann Dailly.
5) William Hamilton marries Mary Ann Dailly in 1901 Saltcoats, NOT Ardrossan, my mistake.
6) They have a daughter, Margaret Hamilton in 1902.
7) Margaret Hamilton marries William Gemmell in 1924 Port Glasgow.

Just a little aside, it was often mentioned that one of Margaret Hamilton's relatives was the Harbour Master at Ardrossan! I've never been able to find out whether that was true or not. Any ideas?
Patrick.

Hi Patrick Gemmell,
I was thinking the Margaret who married John McGraa, was the one in the 1901 census .That is to say Mary Ann Dailly's sister .
